Looper is a 2012 American science fiction action-thriller film[5] written and directed past Rian Johnson, and produced by Ram Bergman and James D. Stern. It stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emily Blunt, Jeff Daniels and Bruce Willis. It revolves effectually "present-day" contract killers called "loopers" hired by criminal syndicates from the future to terminate victims whom they ship back through time.

These targets are identified by gold bars instead of argent, marking the end of the looper'southward contract.
Joe'due south friend Seth confesses to Joe that he failed in an assignment to kill his future cocky. Former Seth has escaped, after warning Seth that a person in the futurity called the Rainmaker will overthrow the five major bosses and shut all loops. Joe reluctantly hides Seth in his flat's floor prophylactic, but afterwards reveals his location afterwards Abe threatens to confiscate half of Joe'southward saved silver. Abe's aristocracy "Gat Men" capture Seth, cutting an address into his arm, and brainstorm severing torso parts. In another timeline, Joe does kill his older self. He moves to Shanghai and becomes a hitman to finance his drug addiction and wild lifestyle. Eventually, he marries and breaks the addiction with his wife's help. Seven years later, his wife is killed when Joe is taken to close the loop. Overpowering his captors, Sometime Joe sends himself dorsum to 2044, altering his history by evading Joe and escaping.
Old Joe experiences vague memories of Joe's actions in the present, and meets his younger self at a diner. He wants to alter history again and relieve his wife by killing the Rainmaker every bit a child. While Young Joe kills Kid Blueish, Old Joe pursues Sara and Cid. When Cid'south face is grazed by a bullet, Sara calms him before he can react and kill anyone. She sends Cid into a pikestaff field and positions herself to block Quondam Joe's line of fire. Joe realizes that Cid will become the Rainmaker if Quondam Joe kills Sara. He commits suicide, erasing Erstwhile Joe's being, saving Sara and potentially preventing Cid from condign the Rainmaker.

Looper was written and directed by Rian Johnson, originally conceived as a brusk pic starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, shortly after making Brick, Johnson'south first feature.[8] After Johnson released The Brothers Bloom in 2008, he re-teamed with producer Ram Bergman, who produced Johnson's previous ii films, with the goal of starting production of Looper in 2009.[ix] In May 2010, Gordon-Levitt was cast in one of the pb roles, which he would play after completing Premium Blitz.[10] Later in the calendar month, Bruce Willis was also cast.[eleven] In the following October, Emily Edgeless joined Gordon-Levitt and Willis.[12] Noah Segan, Jeff Daniels and Piper Perabo were bandage in Jan 2011.[13] Filming began in Louisiana on January 24, 2011.[14] [ verification needed ]

Looper premiered on September 6, 2012, at the opening night of the Toronto International Film Festival.[20] The picture show was and then released theatrically in the U.s.a. on September 28, 2012[21] by FilmDistrict, who obtained the domestic rights from product visitor Endgame Entertainment at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 93% based on 271 reviews, with an average rating of 8.10/ten. The website's critics consensus reads, "Every bit thought-provoking as it is thrilling, Looper delivers an uncommonly smart, bravely original blend of futuristic sci-fi and expert old-fashioned action."[30] On Metacritic the film has a weighted average score of 84 out of 100, based on 44 critics, indicating "universal acclamation".[31] Audiences polled past CinemaScore gave the moving-picture show an average grade of "B+" on an A+ to F scale.[32]
James Mottram of Total Film gave Looper v stars out of 5, final that it was "the best sci-fi moving picture since Moon. The best time-travel yarn since 12 Monkeys. And one of the best films of 2012."[33]
Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter gave the flick a positive review, calling it "an engaging, neatly worked-out fourth dimension-travel sci-fi thriller", but besides criticizing the furnishings involved in making Gordon-Levitt resemble Willis: "At first, the effect is a bit odd, and you tin can't quite put your finger on what's off; then information technology feels downright weird to be looking at a version of Gordon-Levitt who is no longer the thespian yous've known for a few years now."[34]
