When Will Highway 1 Be Opened Again

Construction crews have fabricated such good progress repairing a huge pigsty in Highway 1 in Large Sur that the scenic roadway will fully reopen on April thirty — nearly 2 months alee of schedule.

The winding, two-lane highway, visited past millions of tourists from around the world who gaze at its scenic views, failed virtually 16 miles south of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park during a drenching atmospheric river tempest that hit the Bay Area, Santa Cruz Mountains and Large Sur on Jan. 28.

The Large Sur surface area received the well-nigh rain in that storm, up to 15 inches in some remote areas of the Santa Lucia mountains over ii days. The rain caused a big department of steep hillsides that burned in the Dolan Burn down last August, adjacent to the road at Rat Creek, to plummet, carving a 150-foot gash in the roadway in southern Monterey County just northward of the customs of Lucia.

Caltrans engineers had expected the work to repair the route would take until mid-summertime.

But they said dry weather atmospheric condition over the past six weeks helped advance construction.

"Reopening Highway 1 at Rat Creek just iii months later on a washout of this magnitude is smashing news for residents, recreationalists, concern owners, and those who move goods through this region," said Caltrans Director Toks Omishakin.

"The fixes fabricated will allow for safety travel," he added.

The landslide sent tens of thousands of cubic yards of clay washing into the Pacific Ocean hundreds of feet below, carving a steep V-shaped chasm where the lanes one time ran.

Road crews have worked seven days a week during the day to fill the coulee with compacted dirt to the road level. A new roadbed will be built during the next two weeks as office of the $xi.v one thousand thousand project, followed by paving and striping. Landscaping and guardrails will exist added in the early summertime.

Highway engineers had studied several options, including a bridge, to repair the stunning gap in the roadway, photos of which drew worldwide attention. Crews settled on a plan to supersede the main drainage system at Rat Creek with an oversized culvert, a secondary culvert and smaller overflow culverts. They say that volition increase the chapters of the drainage system, which became plugged in the tempest with boulders, mud and downed trees, and aid it withstand time to come storms.

The contractor is Papich Structure of Approach Grande.

During the repairs, about five miles of Highway 1 have been airtight to all vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The northern turnaround is 2 miles north of Rat Creek at the Lime Creek Span at mile mark 32.ane, and the southern closure is at Big Creek Vista Point at mile mark 27.3.

Businesses north of the closure on Highway 1 in Big Sur are unaffected and remain open. So are business organisation south of the slide. The closure makes it impossible, yet, for motorists to drive from the Monterey surface area to Southern California entirely along Highway ane until repairs are completed.

The winding, narrow road known every bit the Big Sur Declension Highway, which stretches 70 miles from the Carmel Highlands to Hearst Castle at San Simeon, is one of the nearly picturesque roads in the United States. It is a National Scenic Highway and a California Scenic Highway, with the route carved treacherously into towering mountain slopes, and perched on the edge of steep cliffs that plunge hundreds of feet to the Pacific Ocean below.

Since the road opened in 1937, information technology has been closed more than lx times due to slides and other calamities. Just considering of its iconic nature and popularity, which draw tourists from around the world who support restaurants, hotels and stores to heave local economies, highway officials ever rebuild information technology.
